The Neighborhood

Round the corner from the Vatican. A busy business-orientated district during the week and a mainly quiet residential area for upper class Romans during the weekend. Home to the supreme court and two tribunal courts, this is a hot spot for Lawyers. This district does not generally become overrun with tourists, even at the height of the season, making it an ideal place to experience the ’real’ Rome. Head to Cola di Rienzo for a street full of brilliant high end shops and Italian fashion brands. For the very best in speciality ingredients, head to Castroni. Here you can pick up rare ingredients to make the perfect Italian meal or a specialist coffee that you wouldn’t find in any shop outside Rome. At the southern end of the Prati district, you’ll find the walls of the imposing and iconic Vatican City. Technically a separate country to Italy, you can enjoy a day at the Vatican, walking around St. Peter’s Square, marvelling at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or seeing the Pope’s weekly address at midday every Sunday.

For an evening meal, try Ristorante Dal Toscano for a hearty meal of grilled meats after a day on your feet seeing the sights. For a traditional Italian meal that’s only a few blocks from the Vatican but generally off the tourist trail, head to Osteria dell’Angelo. You’ll need to book well in advance to secure a table at the brilliant La Pratolina, where you can enjoy some of the best pizza in the city. Unlike the super thin crusts of regular Roman pizza, La Pratolina use an ancient method that creates fluffier and chewier dough that tastes sublime.

As for places to enjoy an aperitivo drink or late night tipple, head to chic and atmospheric surroundings of Del Frate, with its industrial style lighting and exposed brick walls. Here you can browse through a menu of 100s of brilliant Italian and international wines. For a more hipster experience, try Baratolo, which is a bookstore that turns into a bar in the evening and who’s passionate mixologists will create you a delicious cocktail in a mason jar. Finally, you could head to Settembrini for a classy drink amongst the wealthier, well-heeled locals in the lawyer district.
