The historically significant area of Testaccio is a centrally located working class neighborhood and also a nightlife hotspot. It may not be the most traditionally pretty neighborhood in the city but it certainly is one of the most authentic and exciting. Art lovers should not miss the Macro Contemporary Art Museum, which showcases some of the very best Italian and international modern art. There’s a saying that you can judge a society by what they throw away, and in Testaccio, you can visit the Monte dei Cocci; an artificial hill created over the last two millennia by millions of pieces of piled up broken Amphorae (Ancient Roman jugs), some dating back 2000 years.
For foodies, the Mercato Testaccio is brilliant and very popular street food market, serving up a wide variety of Italian and international takeaway dishes, as well as fresh produce and drinks. In terms of finding a place for a sit down lunch or dinner, Testaccio is well known as one of the best areas in Rome for culinary excellence. Head to Flavio al Velavevodetto for a no-frill but utterly delicious traditional Italian meal in a building carved into the Monte dei Cocci mountain of ancient Roman pottery. Alternatively, try Angelina for a carnivore’s paradise where the menu revolves around delicious meat dishes.
For an early evening aperitivo or a late evening nightcap, head to Ketumbar (located inside the Mercato Testaccio) for a glass of wine, an artisanal beer or a delicious cocktail. Alternatively, Trentatre Testaccio has a great cocktail list and often features live music, but be sure to book a table on a Friday night. For a wild night out for music lovers, you can dance into the small hours at one of the neighborhood’s best nightclubs. Both Akab and Villaggio Globale are well known for their electronic music nights, with an excellent roster of Italian and international DJs taking to the decks.
